A sweeping epic spanning two millennia, WF Waldrip's monumental Africa follows two men, the arcs of whose lives become unexpectedly intertwined: Crixus, a Roman legionnaire, and Alexander Laidlaw, a professional hunter in modern Africa.

Crixus and his fellow legionnaires of Legio XVI Bestia are tasked with capturing wild animals in the heart of Africa, creatures ultimately destined for slaughter in the Flavium Amphitheater, known today as the Colosseum, for the entertainment of the Roman masses. Crixus' ostensible modern counterpart, Laidlaw, assists clients in hunting African big game. Separated by vast gulfs of time, culture, and language, however, the similarity between the two men is more apparent than real. Yet, both remain brothers in that ancient fraternity of hunters, stretching backward into the mists of time, when men pursued the Colombian mammoth, aurochs, and wooly rhinoceros armed with nothing more than a primitive bow and rude spear.
